Australian Art Dealer Steve Nasteski Buys Byron Bay’s Landmark Whalewatchers House For $12 Million

The Byron Bay trophy home Whalewatchers on Wategos Beach that was listed two years ago for $18.5 million to $20 million has sold for $12 million, bought by art dealer Steve Nasteski.

It is a fortuitous purchase by the Brett Whiteley dealer given Wategos was a regular haunt of the iconic Australian artist in the 1980s when he produced his masterpiece Nor-Easterly at Wategos and painted the local public toilet block before the work was removed by council.

There were hopes the designer residence would smash the Byron Bay housing record when it was listed in early 2018 by Salmat co-founder Peter Mattick and his wife Pam, then set at $15.68 million by the neighbouring holiday house of Dakota Capital chairman Danny Goldberg.
